Glaucoma can gradually damage the optic nerve, often without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. That is why glaucoma diagnostic testing is an important part of protecting your long-term vision. At Victory Vision Care, we use a detailed vision assessment to look for signs of glaucoma, evaluate your eye health, and determine whether additional monitoring or care may be needed.
There is not just one test used to diagnose glaucoma. Instead, glaucoma testing typically involves several evaluations that provide information about your eye pressure, optic nerve, retina, and visual field.
Glaucoma is frequently associated with elevated intraocular pressure, but it can also occur when eye pressure falls within a normal range. Looking at multiple aspects of your eye health gives us a more complete picture than relying on eye pressure alone.
Depending on your eye health, risk factors, and previous exam findings, a glaucoma assessment may include:
• Eye pressure measurement to check intraocular pressure
• Optic nerve evaluation to look for changes or signs of damage
• Visual field testing to identify areas of peripheral vision loss
• Retinal imaging or OCT scans to capture detailed images and help evaluate structures at the back of the eye
These tests can also provide a baseline that allows us to compare your eye health over time.
Most glaucoma diagnostic tests are non-invasive and can be completed as part of a comprehensive eye evaluation. We may review your medical and family history, check your vision, evaluate your eye pressure, and examine the health of your optic nerves and retina.
If testing identifies a possible concern, additional evaluation or ongoing monitoring may be recommended. Because glaucoma-related vision loss is permanent, identifying changes early gives us an opportunity to manage the condition before significant vision loss occurs.
Routine comprehensive eye exams are important for everyone, but glaucoma testing can be especially important for patients with a family history of glaucoma, previously elevated eye pressure, certain medical conditions, or other risk factors.
Glaucoma becomes more common with age, making regular eye health evaluations especially important as you get older. Even if your vision seems clear and you do not have symptoms, glaucoma can still be developing.
If you are due for an eye exam or have concerns about your glaucoma risk, we can evaluate your eye health and determine which diagnostic testing is appropriate for you. Early detection and regular monitoring can play an important role in preserving your vision.
